Battleship Island – A Review

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Song Joongki. I was totally hooked on him the moment I saw him on a drama called Triple. He has since become my favorite Korean actor.

Although I haven’t gone Joongki gaga in the last 4 years – I’ve been keeping tabs about him. I knew he got out from the army. That he starred in Descendants of the Sun and that he was marrying Song Hyegyo (yes, like any fan I was crushed at first but now I don’t want anyone else to marry him but Song Hyegyo!)

So when I heard he had a new movie – I was psyched! And when I heard it was going to be shown internationally – in the Philippines especially – I went crazy!!! You see, Korean movies aren’t really released in cinemas in my country. So having Battleship Island in movie theaters is such a treat for Filipino hallyu fans.

And that’s what me and my friends did yesterday – we watched Battleship Island (군함도).

I couldn’t get over how good the movie was and so I decided to rave about it and perhaps entice some hallyu fans to watch it.

The Trailer

Synopsis

As the movie is new as of writing this blog entry, I’ve decided not to include the story as it will create spoilers. But this movie is the story about the Korean laborers who were working in Hashima Island – Battleship Island – and their attempt to escape from the island. The movie was set in 1945 as World War 2 was coming to a close.

The movie stars Hwang Jungmin, Kim Suan (the same little girl from Train to Busan), So Jisub, Lee Jonghyun and Song Joongki.

Why I Liked the Movie?

I didn’t really expect much from this movie especially because it was a historical one and truthfully I am not a big fan of war movies. War movies are exceptionally painful and sometimes a little gory to watch. And yes, this movie had all the violence, blood and action you would expect in those movies.

But I did like this movie because the scenes had me convinced of the struggles of the laborers. The acting in this movie was top notch! Kim Su-an stole the show once more for me. She did that in Train to Busan and did it again here. This girl has a great career ahead for her. My second favorite character was Hwang Jungmin’s Kang-ok. His portrayal of a dad who would do anything for her daughter just tears my heart apart.

I also liked the action scenes and the effects. I was cringing the whole time. It was bloody and gory but these effects had me on the edges of my seat the whole time. The action scenes were real enough for me to cover my eyes at time. Spilled guts, amputated bodies, dead bodies – looked true to me. The set and the casts costumes transported me to another era – very different from today. The colors schemes of the scene were perfect for the dialogue. I loved how the contrast was between the dirty dark tones during the laborers scenes and the clean bright tones when the Japanese were on.

I was wide awake in the cinema during the whole 2 hour plus run of the movie. Even my “sleepy, tired, overworked” friend who sat beside me didn’t fall into slumber.

However…

Although the movie was wonderfully executed, I think they could have done something better.
I am no expert – I am just a movie buff and these to would have made the movie better:

1. Story and Character Development
While acting was topnotch, there were some parts that I felt was rushed. Like the introduction of characters. True there were a lot of them, but it would have explained the movie better. Also, there were characters who appeared but I wasn’t sure who they were or why they were there.
Case in point: Joongki’s introduction (wait when did he arrive on the island?), Lee Jong Hyun’s and So Jisub’s characters (their story was nice but it wasn’t well developed)

2. A waste of So Jisub’s talent
So Jisub is to me a great actor – but movie, what happened?  Something was not right about the way he portrayed the Seoul ganster. I don’t know why, but though this movie is a drama, and we know So Jisub is good at dramas, it was a bit lackluster. An ingredient or two was missing.

3. The Japanese
I realize a lot of people might get angry at this comment – but I think the portrayal of the Japanese might be dramatic / exaggerated for me. It’s true that some of them really had twisted minds during the world war. But there were times when the acting was a bit over the top. It didn’t seem realistic – as with the other elements of the movie. I kind of get that it was so movie goers can better understand the emotions of the coal laborers, but it was too much for me.

Overall, this movie was a good watch. I did get my money’s worth and to top it off it had Song Joongki.
I do encourage you to see it – especially all Pinoy hallyu fans. If we you watch, it will open up opportunities for having more Korean movies shown in the Philippines. And on that note, thank you Viva Films for giving us the opportunity to see Battleship! Cheers to more Asian movies shown in the future! You rock!!!

If you’ve seen the movie, let us know what you think!

Recommended Movie: Sunny (Korean Movie)

I saw this movie awhile ago but I haven’t had the chance to recommend it. I’m sure a lot of you have seen this. And to me it has become my favorite Korean movie to date.

The movie is not about losing the one you love or finding love in the most uncommon place, but it’s about friendship. And this movie is called Sunny.

Synopsis:

The film is about the story of 7 high school friends. The film begins by letting us know the usual routine of our heroine Nami. She is a wealthy homemaker. One day, she went to the hospital to visit her sick mom. It was on that day that she sees a patient who was struggling and shouting in her hospital ward. She reads the name on the door and it says “Han Chunhwa”. Seeing the name makes her remember of her high school days. Later, she finds out that Chunhwa was indeed her friend from high school. Apparently she is diagnosed with cancer and that she was dying. Chunhwa asks Nami if she can find the other members of their high school group “Sunny”. It’s her dying wish and Nami obliges. And thus starts the story of them remembering their pasts and seeing what has happened to each of them in the present.

Sorry I don’t want to write the whole story.. kk better watch the movie!

Why I like it?

This movie brought me to tears and it’s not even a romantic movie! I am not really a sucker for friendship movies because they usually don’t have a very good story. But with this movie, I think the story was absolutely perfect. Also, Korea has more romantic comedies or drama films, but they have very few films about friends, especially about friendship of women. I guess it was a refreshing one to watch.

The transition between old and new was also brilliant. It was not annoying and I love how they connect the scenes. The perfect example was when Nami was walking back to her school.

One minute she was in the present and the next moment she was in the past. And then we see the old Nami. I loved how they did it.

I also liked that there was a balance between the fun, the sadness and the heartbreak in this movie. They did have a love line but I’m glad it was not the emphasis of the movie or else it would ruin it! This movie had me laughing and crying. And did I mention the epic fight scenes both in the past and the future was brilliant!!

Also, the music and the montages of the past were pretty effective to me. Like the one where they fought during a demonstration. I love the songs in the movie too and the musical numbers they did! Gotta love Kang Sora!!!

I know it’s not related to the movie, but I can’t help admiring the posters. From my point of view I think they did a good job with the message of the movie and the posters.

 Teen Version

 Grown-up Version

After watching this movie I hoped that me and my friends would never lose touch and would still be super close.

Another thing…

Though this movie is not a musical, I love how they paid homage to the song Sunny both in the past and in the present. Warning: DO NOT WATCH these videos if you don’t want any spoilers!!!

I wish me and my friends would have a friendship this long.. Enjoy!!

All The Things You Never Knew – Wang Lee Hom

It’s an old Wang Lee Hom song released in 2010.. It’s 2012 and I’m just posting this now! kk

Actually I just finished watching his movie Love in Disguise, which he wrote, directed and starred in — and he also composed and sang the theme song. What can’t Wang Lee Hom do? 🙂 Not that I am complaining kk 🙂

I honestly did not know about this movie or about this song up until today. Yes, I know who Lee Hom is, but in 2010 I was pretty much adored Fei Lun Hai and Wilber Pan to notice him. Ergo, I’ve never seen this movie — only today. It’s not really a favorite of mine maybe because at this point it has become a common plot (see this is what happens when you watch too much dramas!).  But I really do like the music of the movie especially the theme song All The Things You Never Knew (你不知道的事).

I like the lyrics of the song! See this is what I like about Wang Lee Hom’s songs — the meaningful lyrics. It’s a slow ballad and in the video we sing him play the piano. Is it just me or he looks gorgeous playing that! kk fan girl alert! Anyway.. though this has been release awhile back, it’s still a very nice song!

Lyrics anyone?

How many times does a butterfly blink
Before it learns to fly?
The sky is sprinkled over with countless stars
But how many there will remain?

Even as I fly, you fall
So close I can hear you breathe
So sorry I didn’t keep hold of you

You don’t know why I had to leave you
How could I ignore your every cry
All the while the downpour of your tears shattering the ground
So clearly pierced my heart
You don’t know why I had to keep away
Circling in the sky above, just out of sight
So many are the things you never knew

How many times does a butterfly blink
Before it learns to fly?
The sky is sprinkled over with countless stars
But how many there will remain?

Even as I fly, you fall

你不知道我为什么狠下心

Recommended Movie – Hello Stranger (Thai)

I’ve been living in Thailand for about 6 months now. I love it here but my only problem is the language. So to learn the language I have to watch tons and tons of lakorns (that’s what they call their drama) and movies.

And so I found a movie that I like very much. Very much that I like it more than Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

The movie is Hello Stranger (Kuan Meun Ho / กวน มึน โฮ).

The Trailer

 The Story

The story introduces us to a man who has just been dumped by his girlfriend. We see him left in a not so sober state by his friends in an airport. He is on his way to a trip to Korea he would have taken with his new ex-girlfriend. (His expression here is pricess!! and the writing on his forehead say “Dumped”)

And then we see our heroine, who has an overly meticulous OC boyfriend who tells her to do this and to do that. She is also on her way to Korea for her friend’s wedding. She was supposed to be with another friend — but she lied to her boyfriend dear — she’s taking the trip alone.

So both of them landed safe and sound in Korea. After an almost encounter with eating man’s best friend, our hero got so drunk and he couldn’t find his way back home — and he ended up passing out on the entrance of the place the girl was staying. Taking pity on him (as it was cold), she bought him inside the backpacker place. The next day, the girl helped the guy get back to the hotel. And there he found out that he had been left by his tour group!

Having nowhere to go, the man had no choice but to follow our heroine around until she agrees to have him accompany her wherever she goes. And so begins their adventure. But all throughout they’ve never spoken about their names and they have agreed with each other not to tell their real names and use fake names. Amidst their time together, they have fallen for each other. But as fate would have it, they couldn’t be together.

Several months (a year plus later), the man could not forget the girl. And though it’s crazy liking someone without even knowing their name, he really loved her. One night, he ended up calling the radio to tell his problem and at that same moment the girl was listening to that radio show and she realized, the man truly loved him.

The Stars…

Chantavit Dhanasevi or Thur, that’s his nickname, I’m not sure how to romanize it in English (to me he looks like Christian Bautista! kk)

Nuengthida Sophon or Noona (I super love this girl! and she is a singer by the way…)

Why I like it….

While Crazy Little Thing Called Love made me feel giddy and reminisce about my first love, this movie made me giddy about the love you find as an adult. It’s a fun rom com and it was easy to watch. I particularly like the way the movie was told and how the movie ended. As an added information, this movie was actually adapted from a Thai book called “Two Shadows in Korea”. So it explains why the setting is in Korea.

Also on the side, the director of this movie was a director of Shutter! Explains why the scenes were good! The angles the backgrounds were perfect! The scenes really showed you the places in Korea that are frequented by tourists and the places not so frequented by them. Though there maybe some parts of the movie that is not really essential, but it was covered up by the better parts.

I have to say that this movie had one of the best endings ever! Watch it to know why… not giving spoilers on this post! While it’s not really believable to go with a stranger on a trip (didn’t your mom tell you not to talk to strangers), but I kind of like how they ended it. It was truly unexpected but perfect. I think there is more drama and a lasting impression when you have these kind of endings.

As for the actors,  I like Thur! kk Actually I think he is a good actor! I’ve seen some of his movies before and he has improved. Though sometimes his facial expression remains the same! kk After I saw this movie, I became a fan of Noona! kk I think she can carry out an expression and her face is very lively.

The story of Hello Stranger was something I have not read or seen before in a Thai rom-com movie, so I think that’s a big reason why I loved it!

Someday (สักวันหนึ่ง) – OST A Little Thing Called Love

I believe that the easiest way to learn a language is to watch their movies and listen to their songs. That’s what happened when I wanted to learn Korean. Though my Korean is not too good, but I can understand bits and pieces thanks to watching all the dramas, variety shows and having more than 10GB of hard disk space of Kpop songs.

Now because I really have to learn the language, I have decided to listen to Thai music and watch their movies (and possibly in the future their dramas and variety shows). So this is the first ever Thai song that I am posting on my blog.

I actually wanted to do this a few months ago but I never had the time. But at last I’m posting it today. The song is called Someday.

If you have seen A Little Thing Called Love, you would be familiar with this song. This was the song played when Shone was looking at the notebook he made for Nam. I loved this song even though I did not know what it meant. I’m not sure who sang it, so if you know please do leave a comment.

I looked for a video with English subtitles so it would be understood. Oh how I love sad songs.. 🙂 Anyway, the video does contain some spoilers of the movie but that’s ok. The woman’s voice is really good. Thai music is not really popular yet to other parts of the world. Before seeing this movie I only knew G20.. a Thai girl group that is packaged like a Kpop group. I know of them because they guested on Star King. But other than that I don’t know them.

But while riding on my Ah’s car (Ah means younger aunt in Thai), I really like listening to the songs being played on the radio. Well.. Chan pood Tai mai dai ka (I don’t understand Thai), but i like th sound of the songs. I think I would like Thai songs. My only problem is I don’t know where to start and who is a good artist.. Can anyone help me??

If you’re Thai, please leave a comment (in English please) and recommend some Thai songs please 🙂 Much appreciated! Any Thai ELFs willing to help me?? kk 🙂

Thank you!!!

Recommended Movie: A Little Thing Called Love (Thai)

I haven’t recommended movies for so long. It takes a lot of effort to do these recommendations and it stresses me out sometimes so I don’t do it much. But because I am here in Thailand, I thought why not recommend a Thai movie.

I don’t really watch Thai movies in the past and most of the movies I saw were the horror Thai movies (Shutter will always be a favorites) and Sports themed movies (think beautiful boxer). I haven’t explored much of the other Thai movies and I wasn’t interested until my sister recommended I watch A Little Thing Called Love (sometimes called First Love).

I really like this movie so I made this post extra special by adding a few screen caps!

The Story

It starts with P’Shone having an exhibit of his works as photographer. In the background you hear Nam (the heroine) saying that he is the one who taught her A Little Thing Called Love.

Flash back to 9 years ago, Nam was still in her first year of secondary school. She and her friends are going to a cafe, only Nam is not there to study but to see the boy of her dreams. She has a crush on a boy named Shone who is 2 years their senior.

Shone is a helpful boy, giving way to a passing blind man. Later we see him rescuing a cat from a mango tree only to land in front of Nam and offering her some mangoes. He is the son of an ex football player who was not able to bring glory to their town because he could not kick the penalty goal (think soccer). Nam on the other hand lives with her mom and little sister. Her dad is working in New York as a chef’s assitant (side note— is that Bobby Chinn??? LOL)  Nam was promised by her dad that if she achieved rank 1 in school, he will be sending a ticket to US to study there.

Nam has 4 friends who help her a lot. While hanging out in the cafe they overhear girls talking about a book 9 secrets to win the heart of the one you love. They of course put it to the test with Nam. (watching this reminded me of all the crazy things you do in high school!) They write the boys name on the stars, tries hypnosis and giving chocolates.

Anyway, our girl tries to win over the heart of the boy but unfortunately it was never returned back. Eventually she because a beauty (umm I really don’t get how suddenly she had milky white skin when she started as a dark skinned beauty at first). And then suddenly the boy’s best friend from kindergarten studies in the same school and develops an attraction for Nam.

Bestfriend likes Nam but Shone is always together with them. To Nam being with Shone’s bestfriend is the easiest way to be closer to him. But this situation is not a good one our girl because Shone and his friend made a pact never to fall for the same girl. So sad…

Eventually Nam gets to be rank 1 in school. Her friends urged her to tell Shone about her feeling because it will be Shone’s last year in school and she will be going to the USA. She does confess only to be struck by bad news that Shone has a girlfriend. Nam says her congratulations but when her back was turned, she could not hide her tears.

When Shone comes home that day his dad tells him that he will be going to Bangkok to play for a prestigious team. He is thrilled. And it is at this moment that we know that Shone has been admiring Nam for a long time from a far, but he does not know how to say it. Instead all of his feelings are stored in a notebook. He leaves a notebook in front of Nam’s house before he leaves.

Fast forward to 9 years. Nam is back in Thailand to do a fashion show. She has studied in New York and eventually became a world class designer. We are taken to the set of an interview where she is asked questions. The interviewer then lets her see a notebook and asks if she remembers it. Then a surprise — the owner of the notebook appears — Shone is there presenting flowers to her. Nam then asks if Shone is married. Shone says he is not married because he is waiting for someone to come back from America. Nam cries…

Stars…

The movies is starred by Mario Maurer (my cousin said MA-RI-O) as Shone.

Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul as Nam.

I know this is not important but I really love Nam’s teacher! (played by Sudarat Budtporm) Daebak!! kk

The Best Part of the Movie…

This movie is a romantic comedy, focusing on being in love while in high school (or for some secondary school). Though the story may have seem so common but what I like about it is the NOTEBOOK, the notebook Shone made for Nam. When I saw this the first time, I did not expect there would be something like the notebook. Maybe I’m just used to seeing romance movies with the male lead falling for the girl in the end. In this movie, the boy has long fallen for the girl, only that it wasn’t revealed until in end. There was the element of surprise that we don’t see too much in Romantic Comedies.

But there were parts of the movie that really made me cringe.. Like the part where she suddenly becomes a white skinned beauty. So you mean to tell me the application of turmeric works just once?? kk but I know it’s a movie so that’s ok. The conflict between the best friend and Shone was not properly addressed too. I would have wanted them to make a little bit of a highlight, but it seemed too dry. The actor’s make up also need a little improvement. They did not make Mario Maurer attractive in the end of the movie, and Nam still looked like a teenage girl.

Nevertheless, I love the ending of the movie, because its too simple but understandable and its not too long but it doesn’t keep me hanging. Shone’s answer of waiting for a girl and Nam’s happy cry were essential scenes in the movie that all the more make a viewer wipe their eyes.

For one who wants to fall in love or wants to relive their first love, this is worth seeing!

Vision of Love – 4Men (MV)

Ok so, you don’t actually see 4Men in the video, but I am posting this because the video screams Lee Byung Hun.

This is the video of 4Men‘s single Vision pf Love.

I swear I need to see more of them in the Korean music shows. I mean they have one of the best voices in Korea (for a music group) and I love their music very much. They have released really good ballads and I think they deserve more recognition than Korean is giving them now.

Anyway, another reason for posting this video, is because I think this is Lee Byung Hun‘s new Korean movie. And the plus side is Bae Subin (from Shining Inheritance /Brilliant Legacy and 49 Days) is going to star in the movie. From what I gather, it will revolve around 2 friends having the same affection for the girl. Common plot.. maybe but it involves car racing and stuff so I think it would be nice.. kk And Lee Byung Hun, though he is not one of the most handsome Korean actors, but he can act! And I mean really act. I love how he can change characters depending on the movie or drama. Ohh and I just can’t wait for the new G.I Joe movie!!

Really anticipating this new movie.. 🙂

I myself shoulder two persons’ debts (一个人背两人的债) – OST The Lion Roars

I am fond of watching Chinese movies. And in my house we are lucky enough to have one channel that is solely for Chinese movies! And luckier because this channel has subtitles because I cannot understand Chinese!!!

One of my favorite Chinese movies (and my sister’s favorite too) is called “The Lion Roars 河东狮吼”. It’s a funny romantic comedy about two unlikely lovers, a weak poet and an extremely strong girl. The movie is a story of how their love was tested and how they overcame all the problems in the end. I couldn’t count how many times I’ve seen this movie… and everytime it is shown on TV we watch it again!

What I am posting now is a song from that movie. I am also including the lyrics.. I shared this to a friend of mine who studied Chinese and she said this song was very sad… When you hear the melody of this song it is sad.. and when you see the movie it becomes sadder. But though it’s sad I hope you will like it!

I myself shoulder two persons’ debts – Translation

**Don’t behave like a kid
Helpless written on your whole face
Looking for someone to rely but failed
Now, the time comes
I have to leave
You, stand up firmly

Don’t blame yourself
Why not be frank before
Why you hurt the one who was with you and loved you
You are the most spoiled in my life
You are the most beloved in my life
Even though I can not take care of your future any more
I still want to clarify everything before leaving

I myself shoulder two persons’ debts
I don’t mind how many bitters ahead
I would jump into the “forgetting love” sea just for you
Even though I will be tortured to death
** Repeat

Don’t be upset
How many loves can start over again?
This is the God’s arrangement
Now, time comes
How can we change it?

Don’t be too hopeful
Be frank to yourself
Be nicer to the loved one besides you
Don’t hurt the one who loves you again

I’m Going to Love – Park Hye Kyung

For sometime now, the songs that I have been posting on my blog are sad ones (heartbreak songs!). I was looking through my files to find for a song to post that’s not a sad one. Then I browsed through the folder of my Jenny Juno OST — and I found the perfect song to post on my blog. It’s a very upbeat one and I remember that the reason for my downloading the OST was because of this song.

jenny-juno

For those who are not familiar with Jenny Juno, its a Korean movie about a teenage girl who got pregnant. The story sounds familiar right — even the title. I’m sure you’re thinking about the movie Juno. But long before Juno hit the movie screens and impressed us with the storyline, Korea had their own version of a teenage pregnancy movie. To know more about the movie visit mysoju.

The song I am posting, I’m Going to Love (Saranghalgeoya) is the OST of the movie. It was sung by Park Hye Kyung (the artist who made the Korean version of Lemon Tree). This is an upbeat song — very fresh and makes you want to fall in love, and that’s exactly why i like it. I even used this song as a background on one of my moviemaker presentations 😀

I’m Going to Love  사랑할거야 (Hangul)

Kissing Me – Alex (Clazziquai) and Daniel Henney

Daniel Henney is one of the Korean actors I completely adore. The first time I saw him was when I watched the drama My Name is Kim Sam Soon (though sometimes this drama is called My Lovely Sam Soon). Though Hyun Bin (another actor I adore ehehehe) played the main character, I can’t help but be in love with Daniel Henney. And thanks to google it was easy to find information about him. And thanks to youtube, there are videos available that could feed me with Daniel Henney addiction..

I started to search for some videos and movies which he starred and I came across the movie Seducing Mr. Perfect (in some versions it Seducing Mr. Robin). I remember watching this movie on crunchyroll.. that’s about 2 or 3 years ago (did you see his abs! ahahaha). Everytime I watch a movie I usually look for the OST. And I was really excited when I found out that Daniel Henney sang on the OST! And he even had a duet with my favorite singers!

The song I’m posting is from the OST from that movie. It’s called Kissing Me. I’m having a little problem finding the english translation for this song as well as the hangul version. But I did find the romanization version thanks to kreah ( i love her lyrics site!!!). If you do have the translation as well as the hangul, feel free to post it on the comments! thanks 😀
