Recommended Drama – My Name Is Kim Sam Soon

If you are curious about watching a Korean drama but you don’t know which Korean drama to start off with, I would recommend you to watch My Name is Kim Sam Soon (내 이름은 김삼순).

The Story

Its a story about a girl, Kim Sam Soon, in her 30′s who has just been dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve. She goes crying and eventually ends up in the men’s bathroom where she met her future boss, Hyun Jin Heon, the owner of Bon Apetit. Their first meeting is not a friendly one, but little did she know that she would be working for him as the pastry chef of his restaurant. Jin Heon’s mom is continuing to pester him about getting married so he contracted Sam Soon to be his girlfriend. Later on, they both develop feelings for one another, but things get complicated when Jin Heon’s ex-girlfriend came home. Will both Sam Soon and Jin Heon end up together?? Ok.. so I wrote this synopsis myself because I don’t want to spoil the fun of watching the drama :) Although we do know what happens to most romcom (romantic comedy), let’s just pretend not to know!

The Actors…

Kim Sun Ah

This is probably the best role she has ever done! She’s very very convincing..

Hyun Bin

This drama was in 2005, thus this drama was way before Secret Garden.Though we all loved him in Secret Garden, he was pretty good here for a new actor.

Jung Ryeo Won

I super love this girl. She’s one of those who made a successful cross over from being in a girl group to being an actress, she is just absolutely talented! Though this is one of her early dramas. But if you watch most of her works now, you’d be really amazed by her — try watching My Girlfriend has Two Faces.

Daniel Henney

One word! HOT! ahaha I saw Daniel Henney for the first time after watching this drama and I never stopped adoring him! He is so handsome! kk ok… i’ll stop now before I start typing about how handsome he is.. but he is so handsome, isn’t he??

Why I Like It?

Honestly, this is not  the first drama that I have seen, but if I were to watch Kdrama’s all over again, I’d love to start with this. Most of the other dramas that I watched before this were all melodramas with a heavy theme. But this just hit the right spot, with me thinking at times “Why do you keep breaking my heart” or laughing like crazy. It was fun and light but with a story of its own. I guess that’s what I miss watching in romcoms. Some romcoms now just don’t have the flare of the old ones like Samsooni, Full House, Goong or Coffee Prince. To me they will always be classics.

As this drama was made in 2005, I love the fact that they made a story that many would realize and understand. In Korea its a big deal for a woman when they reach 30 and they’re not married or if they do not have a family. I am not Korean, but my Korean friends who are in their 30s have this dilemma. For most of us its just an age, but apparently there, women feel like they are old and there is that pressure to find your match before you get any older. Women also there feel that the older they are, the lesser will be the chance for them to get married. And if the pressure from the age is not enough, parents and relatives ask them when will they get married. My friend hates going to her hometown because of this pressure! To me, I think this drama made girls understand that women in their 30s still do have a chance and that they can still be beautiful!

Kim Sun Ah was at her best in this drama. She was very very effective as 30 year old chubby loveless girl. And what amazes me is that she had to put on some weight to play this girl. She’s a pro.  I have to say this is Kim Sun Ah’s drama and she will forever be remembered as Kim Sam Soon! Even now, when I see her, I always associate her as Samsooni! That’s how faboulous she is!

But if you watch this drama.. please remember that this was made in 2005, so it doesn’t have all the new gadgets and high fashion of the dramas now..

The OST

This drama also had one of the most unforgettable songs! It was this drama that made Clazziquai (Alex, Horan and Dj Clazzi) popular in the mainstream Kpop music. Here are 2 of the songs from the drama which you might have heard before.

Be My Love (first part) and She Is

Picture Spam! Don’t you just love this drama!

So if you’re looking for a good Kdrama to start  your Hallyu addiction, My Name is Kim Sam Soon will be a good one!

Introducing the Hanbok Fusion

It’s almost time for Seollal (Korean New Year) once again and sooner we would be seeing some of our favorite Kpop artists and Kdrama actors and actresses to send their greetings to their fans.. and so I thought I would post something about the Hanbok Fusion.

If you are a Hallyu fan, you would probably know what a Hanbok is. It is the Korean traditional costumes. We see it all the time in the Saeguk (historical) dramas. The Hanbok is a very colorful dress that comes in different designs and colors. Most often these dresses are won for special occasions like wedding, birthdays and traditional stuff. However, that doesn’t stop the hanbok from becoming modernized. Thus I give you the Fusion Hanbok.

Fusion Hanbok is like taking the traditional Hanbok and giving a new twist to it so it can be worn for other occasions like an office party, or a modern wedding, or at an awards show. You may have noticed some Kpop girl groups wear them before (like Secret).

Some of the designs include having the hanbok style cut like a cocktail dress, and some have the same hanbok style as well as the length minus the sleeves. These style added a touch of the contemporary style.

I’m posting up my favorites on this posts…

Which one would you wear?

Sandra Oh Wearing a Hanbok at the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

John Galiano‘s Hanbok inspired gown presented at the 2011 Christian Dior Couture Fashion Show — I LOVE IT!!!!

I love the pastel colors in this modern Hanbok.. I would love to have one of this!

How the Hanbok would look like in the 1920′s….

Now let’s not forget the Kpop stars who look good with Fusion Hanbok… these are the ones I like… oh and I loved the Hanbok’s Secret wore (picture on top).. especially Zinger’s!

Zinger (Secret) – Love the Color!!

Seungyeon (Kara) – I love love this.. it’s something you could wear to a party!

Eunjung (T-ara)

Jessica (SNSD)

I super love fusion hanboks! I wish I had one… I think this is all because of seeing Yoon Eun Hye’s clothes in Goong! kk

But if you would like to have your own fusion hanbok, you can visit this site:  http://www.sonjjang-hanbok.com/

They make hanbok.. but i’m not sure about the quality though. I haven’t ordered from them, but their designs are quite good, especially the cocktail styled hanboks.

Now I want my hanbok!~~~ kk

Kpop Star’s Su Pearls

Annyeong!

It feels so good to be posting on this blog. I really should be doing something now but I thought what the hell.. I’m gonna write a post on my blog! I can’t believe that this blog has come a long way from the first time i created it. But again thank you for visiting my blog :)

Anyway so I’ve been busy with work and everything so I haven’t caught up with the latest Kpop trends. I still have to watch the year end Gayos.. I downloaded them but I need to find time to watch them. I’m missing a lot of songs lately, and my playlist hasn’t been updated for ages.  So when my friend sent a video of a Kpop reality called Kpop Star, I didn’t know about it. And after I watched the performance she sent me I was literally  having goosebumps! I never saw something like this in Kpop reality search!

I am talking about the breathtaking, brilliant, astonishing, superb (I’m running out of adjectives!) performance of Su Pearls!

One word: BRAVO!

I am not kidding when I say that I have goosebumps! This is one of the best I’ve seen on Korean reality! Can you imagine being there when they performed live! Ok too many exclamation points. — that shows you how excited and giddy I am to talk about this audition video. It’s unlike any other..

A quick background about the show: its called Kpop Star and its a show on SBS. Like most Kpop star search shows, they are looking for the next big star. However, this time, the judges on the show are from the 3 big companies that gave us the idol groups whom we now adore. They are BOA (SM Entertainment), Yang Hyun Seok (YG Entertainment), Jin Young Park (JYP Entertainment). I would probably guess that they are looking for the next big name in the Kpop industry.

So anyway, they do the same thing having auditions and stuff, but I have to say most of the contestants on this show are really good… So on with Su Pearls..

The reason why I liked this group so much was because of the harmony they did to the song. I mean, yes its a pop song.. but they gave a soulful twist to the song which made me great! And it sounded totally different from the original. I liked “The Boys” when Girls Generation did it, and I loved it more when they made their rendition to this song. Girls Generation did the Pop version while Su Pearls did the Rnb version! Different genres of music, same song! Wonderful, just utterly wonderful!

Also, you might have recognized the third girl on the video as the girl that sang Rolling In the Deep on the same show.

The video went viral that it was even shown on the news! Park Jimin — OMG! she’s only 15 and she can belt like that! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! This is probably one of the best Rolling in the Deep cover that I’ve heard! And her pronunciation’s great too. If I was closing my eyes, I wouldn’t have guessed it was a Korean singing it!

I’m watching out for these girls again! I like Lee Michelle too.. I’d love to see her sing.. I’m thinking she’s like the next Insooni.. kk I can’t wait to see more of her..

Looking forward to more of this show! (Su Pearls Fighting!!!!)

Recommended Drama – Flower Boy Ramyun Shop

Ok so I haven’t recommended something in a long time.. but I have to write about this before I get stuck up again with lots of work related stuff to do! And because the drama is still airing.

Actually though I am not posting a lot of articles in the blog I have been up to date with the dramas, though not so much with Kpop and variety shows anymore. And this drama is what I’ve been looking forward to see every week!

Most of the dramas I watch are from the big Korean stations, I don’t usually watch dramas on Korean cable because they’re not so much popular. I think the only cable dramas I watched were Manny and Joseon X files. With Korean dramas I tend to stick with the mainstream ones. But I started to watch this out of the whim for the ever so popular Scheduler from 49 Days. Yes, because of the Jung Il Woo, I watched Flower Boy Ramyun Shop!

I’ve always like him since I saw Nae Sarang (My Love) the movie he starred with Lee Yeon Ji among others. He used to have little baby fat that time though, but he was cute. I didn’t even know who the other characters were, except for Lee Ki Woo. This is his come back drama after enlisting for the military — but I only remember him from the movie The Classic.

Flower Boy Ramyun shop is a story about a girl, Yang Eun Bi who struggles through passing a civil service exam. While her fortune about her exams told, the fortuneteller says she will be meeting the one destined for her and she will hear bells when she does. One day, she accidentally meets a handsome but arrogant Cha Chi Soo and she hears bells. Eventually she ends up asking him to date, only to find out (to her humiliation) that he is still in high school. Later we find out that Eunbi’s dad has a ramyun shop but she does not inherit it but instead was given to her dad to a lazy Choi Kang Hyuk. And so Eunbi ends up working for Kang Hyuk and so does Cha Chi Soo.

I actually thought that this was another simple drama, with a story line that contained a lot of cliches, but as I watch the story unfold, its full of twists that I would never have guessed. The script is also commendable as it gives you an excited and giddy feeling thinking about someone you love. I think it’s story, though some parts I’ve seen in other dramas already, has a lot of depth to it. It’s not just seeing a bunch of flower boys and screaming your heart out. Every week I couldn’t wait what’s going to happen next. They’ve got me anticipating for the next episode.

And the biggest plus in the drama for me is Lee Ki Woo!! Like I said I faintly remember him in The Classic. He was the guy who married the heroines mom. But I think the army did good to him! I knew he always has a towering body like a gentle giant, but he looks absolutely fantastic in this drama! And he fits the role perfectly. Yang Eunbi.. if you don’t want the pillar can I have him instead! I love that his character is the dependable man who seems to be lazy on the outside, but in fact is so calculating and smart on the inside!  I want a man like that! ^_^

This drama isn’t a boring one as there are a lot of jokes and characters that make it a nice show to watch. The sub characters add a little more flavor to the ramyun that the main actors have cooked. If this was my ramyun I would give it a 4.5 out of 5… The 0.5  deduction is because there are some cliches that are there.. some twists that I could have guessed but kudos to the writers for giving a new light to it.

This ramyun is better served hot so as a sample, I give you a song from the OST. It’s called Loving Loving by Yoon Sae Ha.

And as a side dish I give you some pic spam of Lee Ki Woo!!! kk :)

A Very SMTOWN Christmas!

It’s been a long time since SMTOWN has made a Christmas album. I think maybe it’s been over 2 years since they did a Christmas album. They did have a summer one about a year ago or was it two. I’m talking about the album the featured Seaside.

Anyway, for the holidays, fans of SMTOWN are delighted because they have released a Christmas album featuring the song Santa U Are The One. The song was sung by Super Junior with Henry and Zhoumi.

First things first.. I’m truly happy that they are reaching out to the world using English as the language for most of the songs for the Christmas album. It’s something Kpop artists don’t usually do for Christmas. I’m sure a lot of ELFs are glad to hear the boys sing in English. I have to say, it’s quite understandable! It’s a good sign because that means SMent is investing in language instructors. And all the songs which were sang in English in the album are pretty good sounding, but the pronunciation, well they need to work it out.. Guess practice makes perfect!

I also have seen that a lot of fans have been pretty upset because it’s only Super Junior singing on the video. Well actually this song is what Super Junior sang for the album. The other groups have their own songs too. But as to why SM used their songs and not the songs of the other groups, i don’t know, but i’m guessing its because if you think about it, the boys have a wide fan base not only on Korea but around the world — and I mean a lot if you combine all the Elfs in the world (fans registered to a fan club and fans who are not registered to one). So for brand recognition (I’m speaking from a businessman’s point of view), a lot of people recognize them.  Yes, they are a bit biased for this, but they have to appease their stock holders too so more would invest in the company.. and the more people invest, the more awesome a company becomes, the better the artists becomes. And also, it’s a possibility that the other groups have their own schedules and they can’t fit in making the music video. And who knows next year, it would be f(x) or SNSD or Shinee or DBSK singing the song. So let’s not bash about it and enjoy the song and have a little of that Christmas spirit.

But isn’t it nice to see all SMTOWN personalities in one video. I mean for me, I always enjoy all their SMTOWN videos even from before. I think its fun to watch!

Again, let’s not bash too much on the video and who sang which song.. let’s just have a very Merry Christmas!!!

Wish I Was There – Song Joong Ki Star Date

How handsome can he be!!!

Song Joong Ki was a recent guest for Star Date on KBS World!!

I swear he’s getting more handsome! And look at those girls.. ahaha I wish I was there — oops sorry about that, that’s just the fan girl talking. But seriously this guy is so handsome and he’s looking younger! Sooo handsome! and the smile.. ok ok I’ll stop.

But I do hope he becomes better as an actor. I mean he’s not yet as good as the veterans in the Korean drama and movie world, but he can act. He just needs more exposure and LEAD ROLES! I do want to see more of him playing the lead in the dramas. He did quite well in Sungkyungkwan scandal, I think he can do good in other roles.

Oh that eye smile! Song Joong Ki!!!!!!!!!!! kkk :)

How Have You Been???

OMG!!! It’s been over a month since I posted something on my blog.. mianhae-yo..

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for me here because I had to transfer to another place for my job. And unfortunately because of unforeseen circumstances in this place, my internet took more than a month to be connected. But anything goes here so I understand that.

I’m going to try to post as much as I can now that finally my internet is ok. I mean probably writing this blog will that think that will make me sane here. Don’t get me wrong, I like this country just fine but I still miss home, especially during the holidays.. :)

So these days I’ve been watching old korean dramas and I have been once again addicted to Ji Sung. I mean he is not super handsome like Jo In Sung or Won Bin or Hyun Bin. But I guess it’s the appeal and how good he is as an actor plus I super loved him and his character in Protect the Boss. Makes me wish to be Noh Eun Seol!!!

So for my great comeback, this is from the drama Save the Last Dance For Me (Eugene and Ji Sung) and it’s called Give My Love by Edward Chun. This is the English version by the way!

Later~~
